Morning Session:
Understanding why stress and trauma is different in first responders: 4 hours
First responders are unique in that their training prepares them to respond to high stress and sometimes dangerous calls. Being a firefighter requires the strength of limb and the focus of mind during these calls and not just anyone is equipped to handle this type of stress. This presentation will explore why stress and trauma are different in firefighters. It will explain in depth the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the common symptoms and behaviors are associated with it. By gaining a better understanding of traumatic stress attendee will be able to identify traumatic stress and learn adaptive ways to manage their stress.
Afternoon Session
Building Resilience: Examining best practices in the field of emergency services. 4 hours
Trauma exposure in the fire service is common. It's common for a firefighter to serve for decades without being affected. However, in 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of psychological conditions highlighted first responders as being more at risk for developing PTSD. The DSM stated that "the repeated and intense exposure to traumatic material" can cause PTSD. This session will speak to the new and exciting approaches to treating trauma in first responders and explore some of the best ways to stay resilient throughout their firefighting career.
